Dippies or Dispros (short for “Disappearing Propellor Boats”) were common in the Muskoka lakes in Canada and along the eastern seaboard of the USA as well. Wih the advent of the outboard motor which made it easy to lift the propeller out of the water, the retractable propeller shaft design characteristic of dippies was no longer an advantage when navigating shoals and rockly lakes.
The Dippy Cufflinks shown here are an extremely accurate rendering in miniature of a 1945 Greavette Dispro model. There are very few working dippies remaining today, and they are highly sought after by collectors and marine restoration shops.
